Three kinds of tariff.
Most tariffs are one of these three kinds, and which one pays off for you depends on the hours of the day when you use the most electricity.
One price all day
Every unit costs the same, whatever the hour you use it.
- The simplest tariff
A different price in each time band
The day is split into time bands, cheap and expensive, set out in the contract, and you pay for each unit at the price of the band in which you use it.
- It can pay off if you use more in the cheap hours of the day
- It needs a meter that records each band separately
A different price every half hour (dynamic pricing)
With dynamic pricing, the price of energy follows the wholesale market price and changes every half hour. The supplier adds its own charge, while network charges and fees stay the same.
- It can pay off if you use electricity mostly in the sunny hours. The market price then often falls very low, while in the evening it usually rises.
- It needs a smart meter.
